SHORAA has been formally incorporated in QLD and is affiliated with Australian Sailing.
The objects of the association are—
- To promote shorthanded ocean yacht racing in Australia.
- To be affiliated as a class association by Australian Sailing.
- To facilitate awareness of best practice safety for yachts, crew and event management to facilitate safe shorthanded yacht racing in Australia.
- To conduct the Race Around Australia (2028 Around Australia Yacht Race) and other future events.
The office holders are:
- Chair: Guy Chester (150,000 nm, 2 circumnavigations mostly solo, offshore racing, Louisiades Rally, Yachting Qld Board member)
- Secretary: Don Cortis (2 Atlantic crossings, Commodore Yorkeys Knob Boating Club Inc.)
- Treasurer: Gavin LeSueur (100,000 nm, 1988 Around Australia Race, extensive solo and shorthanded racing, multihull author)
- Ian Johnston: (150,000 nm, 1988 Race, Round Britain and Ireland, Route de Rhum, SoloTransTasman, sailing author)
- John Cadwallader (200,000 nm, 1988 Race, many offshore miles and races)
- Kevin Le Poidevin (90,000 nm, Globe Solo Challenge, Osaka, SoloTransTasman, RSHYR Doublehanded)
- Mark Hipgrave (Osaka, SoloTransTasman, Solo Fastnet, RSHYR Doublehanded)
Our Patrons are: Lisa Blair OAM who holds many solo sailing records including around Antarctica and around Australia aboard her yacht Climate Action Now; and Don McIntyre who ran the 1988 Bicentenial Around Australia Yacht Race, has had many extreme sailing adventures and created the Golden Globe, Ocean Globe and Mini Globe around the world races.
In addition to the above we have Nic Douglass, Jon Henry and Sharon Ferris Choat on our advisory panel. We are actively engaging with other relevant folk for our advisory group.
